Abstract

This chapter uses the more inclusive terms digital media or technology interchangeably rather than learning technology as this reflects the broad range of devices likely to be experienced by preschool children across home and preschool environments. The different approaches to conceptualizing technology at home and in educational settings are highlighted by the language used. ICT is generally used to describe the information and communication technologies available in preschool and school, a policy term that is strongly associated with educational uses of computers and interactive whiteboards. The chapter discusses the particular requirements and perceived vulnerabilities of preschool children followed by a consideration of the close relationship between learning and play, and what this means for the use of digital media.
