Timescale
Response to brief by 11th Mar 2022. Deliverables complete by 31st May 2022.
The context
The Centre for Research in Digital Education is a large and vibrant group based in the School of Education (University of Edinburgh). We do research on how technology and culture intersect within education, within four specific themes:
- Digital cultures
- Children & technology
- Data society
- Data education in schools
We are 20 academic staff, 3 research support staff, 4 data education project team members, more than 20 PhD students and 8 honorary scholars. We also run a large Masters programme, the MSc in Digital Education, and are developing a new MSc in Education Futures through the Edinburgh Futures Institute.
We are strongly committed to high quality design, and understand how essential this is in building, communicating and exciting the people who engage with our research. Some examples of our commitment to design can be seen here:

Our centre report is an annual (web and print) document celebrating the work of the team and recognising our international importance in the field of Digital Education.
In 2021, we commissioned Astrid Jaekel to produce new illustrations for our website. These illustrations challenged the stereotypical imagery associated with digital education (pictures of laptop keyboards, screens, young people with devices or Matrix-style binary code) instead making connections between nature and technology – not a ‘tool’ or a shiny device, but a component of the condition of 21st century humanity, a gathering of the material resources of our planet, a live connection between nations, regions, people and things.
The defining aesthetic of the 2019-2021 reports has been geometric. In response to the illustrations created in 2021, we would like the 2022 report to integrate the nature-technology relationship.
