Centre colleague and Data Education in Schools Project Officer Dr Jasmeen Kanwal has written a piece for The Guardian on how immigration is dominating the political discourse ahead of the next Parliament elections in Scotland.
The piece explores the recent shift towards less welcoming attitudes in Scottish political discourse on immigration, and argues for the need to tackle disinformation and call out anti-immigrant manipulation tactics that defect the blame for economic problems from the ruling class to an already marginalised group.
Jasmeen mentions Finland's successful media and data literacy policy and argues for the importance of investing in "prebunking" (vs. debunking), meaning educating people beforehand about common disinformation tactics, as well as integration and community engagement programmes.
