We are delighted to announce that we have been invited to collaborate as an academic partner with the AI Learn research centre, as part of the newly-established Norwegian Centre for Research Excellence.

Funded by Norway’s Research Council for a total of 365 million Krone and collaborating with 34 partners from universities, industry, and the public sector, the Centre for Research Excellence is based at the University of Bergen and hosts seven research centres that will take an interdisciplinary approach to address and explore opportunities, challenges and risks associated with the use of AI in education as well as in other learning contexts. The centre investigates AIs potential for learning, work and democratic participation in society by exploring new understandings of human-machine interactions as well as developing new AI systems that aim to enhance human learning capabilities and active citizenry.

With a funding of £28 million for five years, the AI Learn research centre will focus on AI and human learning, its work spanning across five clusters, each developing innovative research projects and building on a threefold approach by advancing responsible technology development, a critical exploration of emerging ethical, cultural and legal issues and a strong focus on human capacity building.

We are honoured to have been invited to be an academic partner to AI Learn. Dr Janja Komljenovic and Dr Ben Williamson will contribute to knowledge sharing with a focus on governance and ethics around the use of AI in education.

Dr Komljenovic represented us last week at the AI Learn launch event in Bergen. She presented the work of our centre and discussed research collaboration with the AI learn team and its partners.
