Museums as Creative Incubators (Professor Angelina Russo)

Increasingly, the ability to successfully share creative artefacts is underpinned by three central and overlapping activities: creative artefact/service production by skilled practitioners; their connection to and participation in a networked society and their ability to develop complex and novel forms of reciprocity.

Such forms of contemporary practice are iterative in their reliance on personal expertise, civic participation and a genuine commitment to knowledge sharing. As a result, new forms of creative production are better situated within environments with a vested interest in engaging in all three activities. Museums offer trusted authoritative environments through which to explore new models of collaboration, knowledge production, dissemination and communication. Using emerging cases as a starting point, this talk explores the connections between creative producers and museums as it expands on the theme of the triple helix (Parry, 2014) and identifies ways in which knowledge production and communication can lead to innovative creative and commercial outcomes.
