In 2010 the UK Research Councils and the Arts and Humanities Research Council initiated a new £30m research programme, Connected Communities, intended to support risk-taking interdisciplinary and collaborative research. This seminar will explore the lessons learned from a study of the 324 projects funded through that programme. It will identify the highly diverse intellectual and activist traditions that these projects have drawn upon and the insights they offer for questions of quality, democracy and the public good of such research and scholarship.

About the speaker: Keri Facer is Professor of Educational and Social Futures at the University of Bristol, UK.   Since 2012 she has been Leadership Fellow for the UK Research Council’s Connected Communities Programme, a unique programme that comprises over 300 projects across the UK and is a global flagship for interdisciplinary, engaged and participatory research activity. Prior to this, she was Research Director at Futurelab, bringing together creative, digital, academic and practitioner expertise to innovate with new models of education exploiting everything from early stage augmented reality to brain-computer interfaces. She has worked with organisations ranging from UNESCO and the BBC to  city farms and local schools. At the moment, she is working on the idea of the relationship between the university and the city.
