Abstract:

Data is all around us. It is increasingly used by powerful algorithms to make decisions which influence our personal lives, financial circumstances and even electoral outcomes. It is predicted that advances in data science and machine learning will rapidly reshape the jobs market through automation. I believe it is important for everyone to have the opportunity to learn about what data is used for, how it is used and what rights individuals have over their personal data. Furthermore, we need a workforce with the computational and mathematical skills to process, analyse and interpret data to solve real world problems. This lecture argues that all children should learn about data as part of main stream education in schools, and proposes how to achieve this.

Biography:

Judy Robertson is professor of Digital Learning at the Moray House School of Education, University of Edinburgh, where her colleagues kindly put up with her computer scientist eccentricities. She has published widely on computer science education, human computer interaction and gender equality. She has spent twenty years collaborating with children and teachers to design, create and evaluate educational technology. Her passion for data education emerges from her interests in programming, statistics, critical thinking and her appreciation of really cool data visualisations.
