On the 19th February, Centre colleagues Judy Robertson, academic director of the Data Education in Schools programme, and Jen Ross were invited to speak at a Goodison Group in Scotland/Scotland’s Futures Forum event on AI in Education at the Scottish Parliament.
Judy and Jen presented research questions and outputs of the project “Towards embedding responsible AI in the school system: co-creation with young people” in the Bridging Responsible AI Divides (BRAID) programme (2022-2028). BRAID is a £15.9 million investment in enabling responsible AI in the UK, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and consulting with children and young people about AI.
The event also featured the presentation of the Unbelievably Creative AI show for learners by Daniel Devine (Digital Skills Education). An output of the BRAID programme designed by project partners at Digital Skills Education, Unbelievably Creative is a talent show contest where young people are asked to distinguish between human and AI-created products, such as art, design clothing, and pictures. The participants are also invited to reflect on ethical issues related to the use of AI in creative contexts and answer questions such as “Is it ever fair to use AI to create art?”, “What are the consequences of GenAI on the work of artists?”, or “Should we always label AI content?”.
Policymakers, researchers, and teachers attended the event, which included a group discussion on issues of and suggestions for responsible uses of AI in the schools.

In February, Data Education in Schools and Digital Skills Education ran the Unbelievably Creative show at the Edinburgh Futures Institute. Six classes from Edinburgh secondary schools attended the events, for a total of 140 learners: Unbelievably Creative at the Edinburgh Futures Institute - Data Education in Schools.
