On Friday 3rd November Kate Farrell, Director of Curriculum Development and Professional Learning, collected the ‘Data Visualisation’ award at the 2023 Data Summit held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.
The Data Lab competition asked entrants to create a data visualisation on the topic of “Community”. The judges assessed the entries against communication, design and accessibility criteria.
Kate Farrell and Jasmeen Kanwal (Project Officer for Data Education in Schools) coordinated the Data Education in Schools competition entry involving 5 schools across the Edinburgh and South East Scotland city region: Windygoul Primary (East Lothian), Seafield Primary and Deans Primary (West Lothian), Broomlands Primary (Scottish Borders), and Dunbog Primary (Fife).
The resulting data visualisation “Weaving our way to school” involved learners weaving coloured ribbons around the school grounds to show how they travel to school. Different colours were used to show whether they traveled to school by rolling/walking, using a bike, bus, train/tram, or travelling by car.
Each of the schools involved will receive an £100 Amazon voucher.
