The Centre’s growing membership and our evolving areas of work have prompted us to rename the formerly-known Digital Cultures research theme to Cultures and Futures. The inclusion of 'futures' in the new name captures an increasingly important strand of work within the Centre and a direction for our research and teaching that we have established as important for us collectively, as well as an area of expertise for a number of colleagues who have joined us recently.
The Cultures and Futures research theme considers present and future connections between digital technologies and their cultural contexts. We examine interdisciplinary knowledge cultures, learning spaces, cultural heritage and creative industries alongside formal education settings, discovering how these both shape and are re-shaped by technology. We have a leading reputation for developing methodological approaches to understanding the future, and we carry out public engagement activities and speculative experiments to help build positive and socially responsible futures for education.
