Kate Farrell from the Data Education in Schools team collected the award for ‘Data For Good Initiative of the Year’ at the British Data Awards held last night in London.

The award acknowledges the work involved in creating British Sign Language signs for Cyber Security, Computing Science and Data Science to help the deaf community in schools, colleges, universities, and workplaces access qualifications and careers in tech.

The project was a collaboration between the Data Education in Schools project and the Scottish Sensory Centre, both based at the University of Edinburgh.

The UK-wide team involved in the project brought together eight deaf people who are also tech experts with funding from Skills Development Scotland to develop and test more than 500 signs.

The British Data Awards were organised by Predatech and the ‘Data for Good Initiative of the Year’ award sponsored by The Dot Collective.
