Last month, Springer Nature retracted an article claiming ChatGPT's positive impact on student learning, "owing to concerns regarding discrepancies in the meta-analysis". The paper, published in May 2025, had been copiously cited in support of the effectiveness of the use of GenAI chatboxes in education.
Centre co-director Dr Ben Williamson shared the news of the retraction on his Bluesky and LinkedIn accounts, reflecting on the premature publication of a "meta-analysis" of the effects of ChatGPT on "learning performance", just two and a half years after the release of the chatbox.
Dr Williamson was approached by US media to comment on the news.
