ELM for Schools: a feasibility study of adapting the University of Edinburgh’s GenAI platform for use in Scottish Schools

This project explores the feasibility of adapting ELM (the University of Edinburgh’s generative AI platform) for use by senior secondary schools pupils in Scotland on a not for profit basis, and aims to design a safe version of the language model, ready to be piloted within local authorities.

The team collaborates with stakeholders in The Scottish Government and local authorities to investigate key issues which need to be resolved before system adoption, e.g., safeguarding, data privacy, AI impact assessment, children's rights impact assessment.

This proposal builds on the work of Centre colleagues Judy Robertson, Serdar Abaci, Jen Ross and Cara Wilson and the Data Education in Schools team, and on the results of the projects below:

  • Digital Education and AI Thematic Hub (Scottish Government) 2026-2027
  • AI Readiness Evaluation in Scotland (Winning Scotland) 2025
  • AI in Secondary Schools: Resource Development and Teacher Professional Learning (RAIUK Skills) 2024
  • Towards embedding responsible AI in the school system: co-creation with young people (AHRC/BRAID) 2024
