Andrew Manches (with Judy Robertson, Gnanathusharan Rajendran and Peter McKenna) has been awarded a research incentive grant by the Carnegie Trust to investigate the role of embodiment in the way individuals think about basic Computing concepts.
The aim of this project is to work with Computing students to identify whether ‘abstract’ concepts such as ‘iteration’ in computing are grounded in any way upon prior sensory and motoric experiences. These project will help identify the potential to leverage embodied mechanisms to support children’s understanding of computing concepts – for example through the design of learning materials or the use of gesture in teaching.
